However, although such elements may be part of the background of this Buddha image, the foreground must be taken by the legend of Jambupati, whose name has become attached to these Burmese crowned images. The legend is unknown in India, but records the humbling of a boastful king, Jambupati, by the Buddha.

The story tells how the Buddha has Jambupati brought before him having first transformed himself into a mighty king, set in an incomparable palace. Witnessing the Buddha in all his majesty, Jambupati accept the dharma and becomes a monk.

This story seems to have been very popular in Burma, as the number of Buddha images illustrating it is considerable.
